-HOW TO BE AN EXPLORER OF THE WORLD
- This desk is directly below an empty room that used to house the desk of my upstairs neighbor. Or maybe it was their baby’s room. Most people in the complex use this room as an office, except for some who have children.
- There is a glass here. What is it for? I must have been drinking from it earlier today. It belongs in the dishwasher.
- One of my favorite hats that I rarely wear is sitting to my left.
- Below the carpet and the carpet padding, I think there is only cement. I think more about this when I have been standing for a long time.
- I have lived in this apartment longer than I lived in any single dwelling since moving out of my parents’ house at 18.
- Although we both use this room as our office, it’s treated more like my husband’s room. It’s the one place where he can store whatever he wants and decorate however he likes. Everything else, we have to at least agree on.
- A few hours from now, the boys will probably end up crowded in this room talking about games.
- The top of the big plastic bin that holds miscelaneous electronics looks rather like a cockroach.
- “My side” of the room is no neater than his by any means.
- Through the split in the vertical blinds, I can just see one of the crescent moons on my wind chime.

Happy New Year, Mary Dirt.
1. My dad has owned this sofa since I was a toddler. It is surprisingly comfortable for its age.
2. Jeff slept on this couch last night…naked. We had to bribe him to put clothes on this morning.
3. I can see the hot tub through the french doors. The lid is staying down now that the wind is calm and it’s finally at the right temperature.
4. Why does my dad have so many fake plants? They’re ugly
5. Drew is next to me wearing his plaid pajama pants. He calls them his Christmas pants, which makes me giggle.
6. There is a small flame under the logs in our gas fireplace, even when it’s turned off. I guess it’s supposed to be there.
7. The candle in front of the fireplace is too close to the fire. The backside is completely melted, but the wick is untouched.
8. The pizza we’re baking smells really, really good.
9. We’re watching Horton Hears a Who, which is thankfully a really laid back movie. I couldn’t handle anything else at the moment.
10. The laptop is humming really loud all of the sudden.
Also, dad just called me about picking him up at the airport tomorrow. Surprise, surprise, she came down to visit him and he needs me to drive them both back. Grr…
I finally have an office room that’s just (well, mostly) mine. And the boys still try to take it over.
Happy New Year!
