The Songs of 2009

December 11th, 2009 by Mary | Filed under The Observatory, web stuffs

This year, I decided to do my year-in-review post via soundtrack. Here are some of the songs that accompanied my amazing year. What’s on your soundtrack?

“Such Great Heights” by  The Postal Service
Honestly? I think of this as the Ikea song. It’s the theme for the year Nimby and I have had together. Yes, we’ve spent much of it at Ikea, and I’ve started to attach a romantic feeling to Ikea itself. But also, doesn’t it sound like Ikea? The little beep-boop business at the beginning is unmistakably the sound of assembling furniture with an alan wrench.

“Petite Poulet” by Sinead O’Connor
Because this year I learned about strengths I didn’t know I had. It has involved a lot of secret communing with something greater than myself. Call it prayer if you like. I’m not a religious person, but this year, I have had to reach out to the ether and ask for help, and amazingly, help has been there.

“Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap
The first time I hear this song, I was sitting on the basement floor helping Nimby put together a server rack. When we heard the opening lines, “Where are we? What the hell is going on?”" We just looked at each other and laughed. That’s the kind of year we had. It’s been incredible and beautiful, and my head is still spinning. Aside from that, Imogen Heap is one of the most innovative people I’ve listened to this year.

“Sunshowers” by M.I.A.
This is one of my favorite songs by M.I.A. that have been on heavy rotation in my car and especially during workouts this year. M.I.A. totally inspires me. She is such a strong, badass woman. This year, I’ve spent a lot of time looking for women who can stand on their own two feet and speak for themselves, and  she really stands out.

“Love Me or Hate Me” by Lady Sovereign
This little chick cracks me up to no end. I love her pretty hard. If you wanna talk about just being what you are without apology, Lady Sov is it.

“Play Your Part Pt. 2″ by Girl Talk
Oh jeeze. I had so much fun at the Girl Talk show at UMBC. This is another artist who was on heavy rotation during my workouts this year. During the show, I danced my ass off with my friend Mikul, and Girl Talk just seems to have wrapped itself around a lot of good memories.

Keep your heart, three stacks, keep your heart.
Keep your heart, three stacks, keep your heart.
Man, these girls is smart, three stacks, these girls is smart.
Play your part.
